Like H.umbellata also H vulgata consists of hundreds of "small species" which are nearly impossible to distinguish in nature. This is due to the apomictic (asexual) reproduction. This group of species is very common both in open forests and along the roadsides. Just if there is a dry, sandy place, you'll certainly find H.vulgata. Flowers of this species and other Hieraciums are the favorite food for the night moth Hecatera bicolorata, which you may see digesting inside the flower.
