The species is origin is in Eurasia, but it has been in the gardens of northern Europe since at least 16th century. The flowers are usually bluish and have a pleasant odor, strongest at night. Because the plant belongs to the same family with cabbage it is a good food plant for many caterpillars. My first Hesperis had just this destiny. Before I noticed it was eaten to the ground. Fortunately the root was intact, so a new seedling appeared next spring, hopefully with better luck.
